Teaching Hosptial Carries out Bilaterla Knee replacement Surgery

As the University intensifies efforts to change the narrative of medical tourism outside Nigeria, Babcock University Teaching Hospital has once again recorded another first: a successful bilateral total knee replacement surgery. According to the medical team lead and Head of the Orthopaedics Department, Dr. Kelechukwu Onuoha, the procedure was carried out on a 65-year old female patient the same day. “The woman had severe knee osteoarthrittis on both legs. Surgery was on November 8 and lasted about five hours,” he said. “By God’s grace, the surgeries were successful and the patient has since been discharged.” He added that though she is walking with support now her legs were now straight “The cost is definitely cheaper than going abroad or any other hospital in Nigeria,” said Dr. Onuoha. Within the last two years, the department has carried out more total hip and knee replacement as well as spinal cord surgeries. Two of the hip replacement surgeries were for a 57-year old female and a 77- year old male. “Both surgeries which lasted two hours, were carried out under general and epidural anesthesia,” said Dr. Onuoha
