Microorganisms continue to have a very profound effect on life and cases of diseases caused by them have been referenced even in the Holy Scriptures. Microbiology, the scientific discipline that studies these ultramicroscopic “creatures” has evolved over the centuries. There have been an older techniques used by pioneer microbiologists over the years while tremendous new technologies have been developed to tackle the problems of emerging and re-emerging disease pathogens, and to re-engineer these microbes in other to make them useful to mankind.
The Department of Microbiology is located in the School of Science and Technology, Babcock University, and it offers Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology. The main thrust of the Department is to provide knowledge to the study of microorganisms and their effects on man and his environment. The Department is headed by a qualified microbiologist with a long academic and administrative experience, and supported by qualified academic, administrative and laboratory support staff who participate in the day to day administration of the Department.
