ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT: The department of Haematology and Immunology is one of the four departments that make the up Faculty of Pathology in both the Nigerian and West African Medical postgraduate colleges. The department has been accredited by the Medical and Dental council of Nigeria and the West African College of Physicians to undertake undergraduate training and residency training respectively, hence, making it both an academic and clinical department. The department possesses the requisite mix of faculty and staff needed to meet up with the demands placed on it.
The department functions in the following capacity;
Clinical/Consultative services: qualified Consultant haematologists manage both inpatients and outpatients. They are also always available for advice regarding clinical or laboratory issues during office hours and also provide emergency services outside work hours. Training of specialists is being done haven being accredited by the West African College of Physicians
Laboratory/Analytical services: The department provides diagnostic services via prompt analysis and reporting of human specimens specific to the haematology laboratory. These are carried out by qualified medical laboratory scientists with consultants giving clinical interpretations towards appropriate patients’ care. This is enhanced by the presence of modern equipments with tests results being validated by a full program of internal quality assurance measures. The laboratory comprises of three sections mainly routine haematology, serology and coagulation. Our major strength is the provision of safe blood and blood products.
Teaching: the department being affiliated to the Benjamin Carson Snr College of Health and Medical Sciences of the university plays a vital role in the teaching and training of medical students in the first year of their clinical training. Haematology and immunology being one of the foundational courses needed for excellent medical education. This is done through the means of formal lectures, practicals, seminars and tutorials.
