MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the school is to provide high quality, broad-based nursing education that is based on Christian values. The school will prepare men and women of various ethnic and religious backgrounds to become dedicated and committed nursing professionals who are ready to advocate for the principle of preventive health care and are willing to take on leadership roles. They will be equipped with clinical skills and research capabilities that will make a difference in this generation. Emphasis will be placed on client-centered nursing care practices, and holistic approach to learning in the context that integrates faith and learning.

PHILOSOPHY

As we enter the new millennium, there has emerged a realization that the health care needs of our community are not being adequately met. As the society becomes more informed and increasingly aware of its fundamental rights, health care professionals must be adequately prepared to deliver the quality of care that is relevant, functional and acceptable for their clients.

Realizing the challenges of the new millennium and the complex nature of our society, we at Babcock University School of Nursing Sciences are committed to providing competent professionals for the Nursing education careers with a well-structured, broad-based professional training that is relevant and functional, reflecting a Christian orientation.

While upholding the importance of the highest academic standards, the uniqueness of Babcock University is to be found in the pursuance of the Seventh - day Adventist Philosophy of education that emphasizes the harmonious development of the academic, physical, psycho-social and spiritual potentials of students.  The Department of Nursing Sciences believes that as we seek to develop high professional competence in our students, we also desire to integrate Christian values in preparing Nursing and Midwifery professionals, in harmony with our conviction of what Christian education should be, to appreciate the meaning of the full restoration of dignity, value and self worth to mankind.  Therefore, in developing professional skills in our students we hold in high esteem the following values:

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the school are to:

· Provide candidates with broad-based professional training that is relevant and functional, reflecting a Christian orientation.

· Provide students with an education that will assist them in analyzing knowledge from the arts, sciences and humanities in the development of professional skills and the use of nursing theories in making nursing practice decisions.

· Prepare nursing students who will demonstrate effective leadership and management skills using variety of communication techniques in the management of diverse nursing practice situations.

· Produce nursing graduates with an orientation for preventive health care in harmony with universal philosophy of the world health organization (WHO) who can adapt teaching/ learning strategies to meet the specific needs of individuals, groups and communities with respect to wellness and illness concerns.

· Prepare students who can articulate principles of consumer advocacy, accountability and responsibility taking into account pertinent ethical and legal implications in accord with the current standards of professional nursing practice.

Competences to be demonstrated by the graduate of bachelor of nursing science degree

Graduate will be able to:

· Perform accurate assessment of client of various ages.

· Make appropriate nursing diagnosis that are grounded on accurate data.

· Develop appropriate plan based on the nursing diagnosis.

· Implement nursing intervention to resolve the diagnosis.

· Incorporate medical plan into nursing intervention supported by appropriate scientific theories and principles.

· Communicate significant data to appropriate members of the health team.

· Teach clients and others about health issues and concerns.

· Initiate and conduct nursing research.

· Participate in multidisciplinary research projects.

· Serve as a change agent by constantly reviewing the total environment in which he/ she works.

· Function as an advocate for the clients and the profession.

· Demonstrate leadership qualities by recognizing his/ her own needs, work effectively as a member of a team, make decisions based on relevant data and institutional policies.

· Demonstrate professional growth through participating in continuing education programmes.
