Information is what reduces or clears our ignorance about things that would otherwise constitute barriers to our desired progress. It awakens awareness, which leads to increased tempo and responsiveness to things that truly matter the most. This ultimately leads to remarkable progress. Information is essential to life as we live in a changing world in which one has to cope with its dynamics with wisdom. It is believed that information superiority is decisive in securing and sustaining competitive advantage.
Information Technology (IT) is application of creativity, innovation and scientific knowledge to meet particular information and closely tied needs. It is art and science of deploying or employing computing resources to eliminate or reduce particular ignorance and provide information controlled convenience for specific people. It involves the study, analysis, design, development, application, maintenance and evolution of appropriate computer-based information systems and more for the benefit of humanity. The department of IT established BSc Information Technology programme to prepare IT researchers and professional for IT challenges. IT specialists focus squarely on making computing resources excellently useful in providing information and its controlled convenience towards more productive and pleasant life.
IT related fields include Computer Science, which is the study and advancement of theories and methods underlying computers and software systems, and Software Engineering, which is the study and advancement of theories, methods and tools for building large software, within agreed time and cost, and providing the desired functions and reliability. Cyber Security, Computer Engineering, Mathematical Statistics, and Business Administration, among others, are also related fields. IT sits firmly at the centre of all computing and other related fields, by virtue of its focus (Figure 1).

It is obvious that there is a lot of work to be done by IT learners and professionals. Embarking on it, with the seriousness it deserves, will definitely lead to a successful career and a better tomorrow. Remember that a dull axe is the one that requires great strength; be wise and sharpen the blade (Ecclesiastes 10:10).
The fast growing trend in both research and applications of IT from the perspective of hardware and software demands that IT programs in Babcock University have to be purpose and market driven, and research based with a well-defined focus on providing solutions to contemporary problems in both industry and academics. The department of Information Technology, running BSc (Hons) Information and Communication Technology and BSc (Hons) Information Technology, was established to fulfil these noble goals.

AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE DEGREE PROGRAMME
The aim of the programmes is to equip its students with the knowledge and skills necessary to fulfil organizational needs of computer-based information systems, grow into leadership positions, and pursue research or graduate studies in the field, upon graduation. Graduates will be able to select, create, apply, integrate, administer and maintain computing technologies in organizations and within the larger society requiring collaboration.
The specific objectives of the programme are to:
a. Provide students with a broad and balanced foundation of Information Technology knowledge and practical skills
b. Develop in students the ability to apply knowledge and skills to solve potential problems of Information Technology
c. Equip students with the capacity for professional practice in Computing and Information Technology
d. Develop in students a range of transferrable skills of information technology to all aspects of human endeavours
e. Develop candidates for self-employment and job placement in government or in any industry
f. Create in students appreciation of the importance of information technology in industrial, political, economic, legal, natural, technological and social contexts for a better world g. Develop in students the urge for academic and professional pursuit in information technology and related disciplines.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Candidates can be admitted into any of the degree programmes in the School of Computing and Engineering Sciences by one of the following three ways:
Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) Entry Mode The minimum academic requirement is credit level passes in five subjects at ‘O’ Levels in nationally recognized examination. The subjects include English Language, Mathematics, physics, chemistry and any other science subject, which are relevant to the intended programme, at not more than two sittings. In addition, an acceptable pass in UTME, with relevant subject combination, is also required for admission into first year (100 level).
Direct Entry Mode
Candidates seeking admission into a programme in science through Direct Entry must have passes at GCE ‘A’ Level/IJMB or its equivalent, in a minimum of two science subjects relevant to the intended programme, to be considered for admission into second year (200 level). This is in addition to fulfilling the requirement of a minimum of credit level passes in five relevant subjects at ‘O’ Level as indicated for UTME Entry Mode.
Inter-University Transfer Mode
A candidate can transfer into 200 level provided they meet the relevant qualifications, including entry requirements. Universities are to certify that students meet the minimum requirements for the inter-university transfer.
