THE NATURE AND IMPORTANCE OF INFORMATION RESOURCES MANAGEMENT
Advances in information technology and the radical changes it engenders in the workplace have compelled organizational leaders to recognize information as a valuable resource comparable with capital, equipment, staff and mineral resources. The need for highly-skilled manpower who can effectively manage data, information and knowledge using existing and emerging communication technologies is intensified as our contemporary society gradually transforms into a knowledge- driven society. The relatively new discipline of Information Resources Management (IRM) is designed to meet this need.
The IRM curriculum is unique in Nigeria. The program is aimed at producing graduates who can manage information and information technology ethically, and professionally to meet the needs of end users in various organizational contexts. The information manager is versed in information systems analysis and design, database design and web design. He understands the principles and practices of records/archives management, knowledge management as well as modern management techniques.
The multidisciplinary nature of the program gives students wider employment opportunities across sectors of the economy. Graduates of Information Resources Management can work as digital librarians, web masters, information consultants, database designers, curators, records managers, health information managers and knowledge managers in a various information environments like the library, publishing houses, banks, museums, medical and health institutions, records offices, archives, broadcasting organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), law firms, telecommunication companies as well as international organizations.
Bachelor in Information Resources Management (BIRM
The Bachelor in Information Resources Management (BIRM) aims to prepare graduates to be information and technology literate, and to effectively deal with the theory, organization, and implementation of information resources management with associated technologies in interdisciplinary and cross functional environments.
Information Resources Management provides and promotes regional, national, and international leadership for the advancement of education, research, and service in the discipline of Information Resources Management. The program is designed to prepare students to be key players in the Nigerian information industry and to provide excellent leadership in the world of work in Nigeria and the world at large. Graduates of Information Resources Management have opportunity of working in a variety of information environments like libraries, records offices, archives, museums, publishing houses, information centers, banks, insurance companies, medical and health institutions, manufacturing companies, broadcasting organizations, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), law firms, telecommunication industries, international organizations such as WHO, UNDP, UNICEF, etc.
DURATION OT THE PROGRAMME
The normal period for an honors degree shall be eight (8) semesters in the university
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADUATION
The Bachelor of Information Resources Management (BIRM) program is planned for a period of four (4) years consisting of eight (8) semesters. Each semester consists of 16 weeks of formal teaching and assessments. Each 3 credit course includes a scheduled compulsory one (1) hour practical per week. The general requirements for graduation include the following:
a) Completion of a minimum of 170 credit units including all GEDS courses, all core courses and a minimum of four elective courses (which sums up to 8 credits).
b) Carrying out a research under the supervision of a qualified staff and presenting and defending it successfully.
DEGREE PROGRAMME AND DEFINITIONS OF COURSES
There shall be a uniform degree programme in Information Resources Management, identified as Bachelor of Information Resources Management (BIRM). All institutions should therefore harmonize their degree nomenclature in line with this prescription BIRM.
Core/Compulsory Courses
Courses specified by the department which a student must take and score minimum of 50 percent otherwise the course must be repeated.
i. Core courses are courses central to the degree program in view and are normally offered on a Departmental basis.
ii. Core Courses constitute about 78 per cent of all the course units that the student must take to complete the requirement for a degree in a given department.
iii. Core Courses are courses in the principal subject area, which students must take and pass.
ELECTIVES
These are courses students are free to choose, as they desire. The students are required to do at least 4 of such courses giving a minimum of 8 credit hours.
Pre-requisite course
A Pre-requisite course is that which must be taken first and passed in order to enhance the understanding of subsequent course or courses.
GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES
General Education Courses are taken from any area regardless of student’s specialization, with
the aim of broadening the student’s academic horizon.
Credit unit
A credit unit is the equivalent of fifty minutes lecture/tutorial work per week per semester.
