School of Public and Allied Health

The School of Public and Allied Health (SPAH) in Babcock University was established on the 1st of July, 2011 to facilitate training of special healthcare personnel specifically to meet the health system manpower needs of Nigeria, and the world in general.

 

 

The School is made up of the:

i.       Department of Public Health, awarding B.Sc Honours degree in Public Health.

ii.     Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, awarding B.MLS Honours degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences.

MISSION

The Mission Statement of the School of Public and Allied Health, Babcock University, is to promote and improve medical care and health of all individuals, while preventing, diagnosing and controlling diseases, through Christian Education and Medical sciences.

PHILOSOPHY

The philosophy of the School of Public and Allied Health is borne from the preferred preventive health care model of Primary Health Care (PHC) which acknowledges that efforts to improve health must go beyond the treatment of

diseases and must address all conditions affecting the health of populations including human behaviour, socio-economic conditions, and environmental impacts on human health.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

The goals and objectives of the School are to:

1.     Promote Christian Education and Medical Sciences, through our undergraduate and graduate programs.

2.     Produce professionals who will be leaders in all areas of their operations.

3.     Impact health through skills acquired in all core areas of Public health and Medical Laboratory Sciences.

4.     Promote and enhance good health through our undergraduates and graduate programs.

5.     Develop research and leadership skills through our Undergraduate, Masters and PhD programs.

6.     Expand the scope of health delivery system through Medical Laboratory advancement.

7.     Provide community-based training programs and develop partnership with health agencies in order to promote good health in all areas of operation.

8.     Provide support for all arms concerned with health delivery activities enhance restoration of health to all.

9.     Combat and reduce to the minimum, emerging Public health and Medical problems.

10.  Promote the biblical injunction of health practices of the Seventh-day Adventist.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENT

A minimum number of earned Credit Points for graduation shall be as stipulated by the specific degree programmes in the School of Public and Allied Health.

Admissions Requirement

GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

1. Candidates with at least a Bachelor of Science (Honors) Degree, Second Class Lower Division of Babcock University or of any other recognized University, in any of the Basic Sciences, Medical/Health Sciences, Public Health, Medical Laboratory Sciences, Environmental Health, Health Education, Home Economics, Nutrition & Dietetics, Medical/Health Records, Demography & Social Statistics, Ecology/Geography, Health Services Administration and Management, Medical Sociology/Anthropology, MBBS and , with post National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) would be considered for admission into the MPH programme. Those with strong Biochemistry background will be suitable for admission into the (MPH) Health Promotion Nutrition Emphasis.

2. In addition to the above requirements, applicants must satisfy the ordinary level (‘O’ level) first degree matriculation requirements of Babcock University, that is ‘O’ level credit passes at not more than two sittings, including English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics or one other appropriate subject.

3. Candidates for Health Ministry are required to have at least a Bachelor of art in (B.A Hons) Theology, Religion, Pastoral Ministry and PGD

4. Applicants for Health Ministry must poses at least 5 O’ Level or its equivalent in not more than two sittings. A credit pass in English Language, Biology, and Christian Religious knowledge and any other subject. Mathematics is an advantage.

Admission recommendation shall be made to the Postgraduate School through The Department Postgraduate Committee. Recommendation for Admission will be based on Candidate’s performance in the screening exercise (written/oral) to be conducted by the Department. Applicants are also expected to write and submit a two page proposal on their research interest with their application.
