About Us

A Department that trains  students to acquire knowledge, this will serve as tools to provide solutions to various social and economic problems in the society both nationally and internationally.

Admission Requirements

Candidates must have obtained 5 credits at not more than 2 sittings in 5 subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and any other RELEVANT social science subject (Commerce, Government, Financial Accounting or Geography) at SSCE or GCE Ordinary Level.

For the purpose of the minimum requirements in each Programme, the courses are categorized into three

1.     General Education Courses

2.     Core Courses

3.     Electives

Every student must take and pass each core (compulsory) course before he or she can be awarded a degree.General Education Courses are University courses outside the Department. Thus, students in the department must take such courses outside the department.

Elective courses will consist of a wide range of courses from which a student must select a given number of courses, which the student must pass before the award of a degree.  Such would be additional and/or advanced courses that would not be required of all students, but from those specializing in such subject groups.  Most of the electives however, would be outside the compulsory/required subject areas and could be from within or outside the Department and/or from within or outside the Faculty.

Cognate courses are to be taken from other Departments.  For each course specified, the categories to which it belongs and weight (credits) attached are indicated.  All courses are listed by the year in which they could be offered in the relevant programme.A credit in a course is defined as one contact hour of lecture/tutorial/seminar or three practical per week in a semester of 18 weeks.

TRANSFER STUDENTS

Due to the exigent nature of its programs, Babcock University does not normally accept student transfers. However, students wishing to transfer to Babcock University from another accredited college or university must follow the same application procedure as other students. Complete transcripts of studies taken elsewhere  and a letter of recommendation by the current school must be submitted, even if no credit was earned. Such credit will not enter into the GPA calculation, but can be counted towards degree requirements.

Credits of examination taken at other colleges or universities will be accepted according to Babcock   University standards (see section on “University Credit by Examination” in the Academic Policies section of this Bulletin). Students should spend a minimum of three years before graduation. A maximum of 84 semester hours may be accepted from a college or university where the highest degree offered is the associate degree. Background deficiencies revealed by transcripts and entrance examinations will be given individual attention.

Conditions regulating the admission of transfer students are summarized below:

1.      Only those courses that are comparable to Babcock University courses, and for which the student has earned a minimum grade of “C” (2.0 on a 4- point scale or 2.5 on a 5-point scale) will be accepted.  The overall CGPA on all previous college work must be at least a C.

2.      If a transfer student requests a transcript from Babcock University before they graduate, credits from previous institutions attended will not be listed on the transcript.

3.      Approval of the Senate is needed for a student to take any class in another institution while registered at Babcock University.

4.      A student who has been dismissed from another institution because of poor scholarship or citizenship,or who is on probation from that institution is not eligible for admission.

5.      Regardless of the number of transfer credits accepted, a student must meet the general residence of three years and take general education courses of Babcock University to qualify for graduation.

Direct Entry Admission

Candidates with A’level and university diploma certificate may apply for admission into 200 level for the relevant undergraduate programmes. Complete transcript must be submitted by the student. Babcock University General Education Courses must be taken by Direct Entry students. While commensurate credits may be given for specific courses passed in any recognized diploma or certificate examinations, no ‘direct entry’ candidate is considered for whole session exemptions by academic University policy.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

An international student applying to Babcock University (BU) must have obtained the equivalence of the Senior  Secondary  School Certificate(SSSC).The student is required to list only the institutions and dates attended on the application forms, but will not be accepted by Babcock  University  until  the university  has received original transcripts, records, and official copies of all credits, degrees, diplomas, and other credentials with validation by faculty or national officials. These should be in the original language, accompanied by a translation (not an interpretation) in English, done at the nation’s embassy, if possible. The Registrar will evaluate academic documents received from international students. Proficiency in English, both written and oral, must be proven before regular admission. International students are strongly advised to remain in their homeland until they have received official letters of admission from BU. Such a letter will be issued only if the student’s academic credentials are satisfactory, a surety advance  deposit made, and the student is able to demonstrate ability to finance his/her education at Babcock University. International students must have students’ residence permit or visa to qualify for study at Babcock University. International Students’ must report to the International student’s Adviser at the Registry with their documents upon arrival on campus.

Admission Credentials

A student is not considered as a regular undergraduate candidate until original/official certificate(s) have been submitted to BU Registrar for verification purposes.

Placement Tests

All new students may be required to take Placement Test in English Language and Mathematics.

AuditingClasses

Students desiring to audit classes (attend class periods without taking tests or examinations)must receive official permission from the Registrar. No academic credit will be awarded, and the course will appear on the transcript designated as “AU\". The tuition charged for auditing a class is the same as for regular classes.

Students who audit classes must attend at least 80% of the classes and laboratories and pay the same tuition as others, but they are not required to do class assignments or sit for tests.   They will be given a grade of AU, but no credits.  A student who fails to meet the attendance requirements will be given a “W”.  Should the student later desire credit, he must retake the class.
