Department of MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE

PROGRAM

Medical Laboratory Science Programme offers the Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science Degree (BMLS), run in a Faculty setting (Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science and each area: Medical Microbiology & Parasitology, Clinical Chemistry, Haematology & Blood Transfusion Science and Histopathology), but being a Department is currently located in the School of Public and Allied Health in the College of Health and Medical Sciences.

PHILOSOPHY OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SCINECE PROGRAM

Medical Laboratory Science entails the study of human and animal tissues, body fluid, excretions and the production of biological for the purposes of diagnosis, treatment and research to the extent that they relate to the state of well-being of the person(s) or animal(s) whose tissues or excretion are involved.

1.       The broad philosophy of Medical education in Nigeria as it affects Medical Laboratory Science is to:

a.      Provide an in-depth scientific and professional background for the production of Medical Laboratory Scientists who would be capable of working anywhere in Nigeria including Primary Health Care.

b.     Produce specialist Medical Laboratory Scientist with ability to manage resources and manpower, and initiate a lead research in health and science.

c.      Train and develop highly skilled Medical Laboratory Scientists with sufficient management ability to play a leadership role in the training and practice of Medical Laboratory Science.

2.       Medical Laboratory Science is a very dynamic profession with continuous emergence of new procedures and instruments which justify adequate orientation for operational research by practitioners. The graduates are therefore expected to keep pace with changing trends.

Our philosophy is anchored on the harmonious development of the intellectual, physical, social and spiritual potentials of students; and inculcating in men and women a nobility of character.

RATIONALE FOR THE PROGRAMME

i.   To provide the need for evidence based medical services to the Country.

ii.  To make accurate diagnosis in medical services based on laboratory investigations.

iii.  To provide evangelistic tools in ensuring total medical care.

iv.  To ensure availability of Christian medical laboratory scientists who are deeply rooted in the health principles of the church and can assist in carrying out her medical messages.

OUR MISSION AND VISION

Mission Statement

Our mission is to team up with other Medical Professionals to continue the healing and teaching ministry of Jesus Christ “To make man whole” Luke 9:6.

Vision Statement

Our vision is to be a leading Department of Medical Laboratory Science in Nigeria Universities, producing graduates of Medical Laboratory Science who can provide quality service in Medical Diagnostic and Research Laboratories.

Our Objectives

1.  To instill in students a sense of enthusiasm for the profession; an appreciation of its application in different contexts (in areas such as general Medicine, Food and Beverages, Pharmaceutical industries, Utility Department e.g Water Corporations, Research Institutions etc).

2.  To involve the students in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning, studying and research.

3.   To provide students with a broad and balanced foundation of Medical Laboratory knowledge and practice skills; performing effectively in clinical diagnostic services, academics and quality assurance: and function independently or in collaboration with other members of the health team in the care of individuals and groups at all levels of health care.

4.  To develop in students, the ability to apply their medical laboratory knowledge and skills to the solution of theoretical and practical problems in laboratory medicine.

5.  To develop students through an education in medical laboratory science, a range of transferable skills of value in medical and non-medical employment.

6. To provide students with a knowledge and skills base from which they can proceed to further studies in specialized areas involving medical sciences.

7. To generate in students, an appreciation of the importance of medical laboratory science in an industrial, economic, environmental, health and social context.

8. To produce students with the ability to generate biological and diagnostic reagents as well as to fabricate and maintain laboratory equipment.

9. To also empower Graduates of Medical Laboratory Science with skills that will enable them engage in income yielding ventures, i.e. a re-orientation from the “take-a-job” mentality to the “make-a-job” mentality.
